What Is a No-Deposit Bonus? The Real Value, Computed

Almost everyone believes a no-deposit bonus is small but genuinely free, and that the wagering requirement is the thing to watch. Both halves of that are wrong. The term that destroys a no-deposit bonus is the maximum cashout cap — the one the UK’s 2026 bonus reforms left completely untouched, the one almost no guide models, and the one that fixes your ceiling before the first spin. A $25 bonus at 40x with a $100 cap has a hard ceiling of $17.86 in realisable value, and if surviving the required turnover takes a run-up of $500 to $2,500, that ceiling falls to between $4.63 and $0.98 (16Best analysis).

What is a no-deposit bonus?

A no-deposit bonus is a small amount of bonus credit or a batch of free spins that a casino gives you for registering, with no deposit required — and which becomes withdrawable only after you have wagered it many times over, up to a fixed maximum. Three clauses do all the work in that sentence, and only one of them is ever advertised.

The advertised part is the face value: “$25 free,” “50 free spins.” The unadvertised parts are the wagering requirement, which forces the bonus through the house edge before it can be touched, and the maximum cashout, which confiscates everything above a ceiling regardless of what the screen says. No-deposit offers are also typically sticky — the bonus principal is never withdrawable at all, only winnings derived from it, a distinction bonus guides describe as the difference between play-only funds and cashable ones.

So the honest definition is not “free money.” It is a call option on a small, capped payout, priced at several hours of your time. That reframing is the whole page. Everything below prices the option.

The eight-term checklist, ranked by damage

Run these eight terms against any real offer, in this order — they are ranked by how much value each one destroys, and the first two account for nearly all of it. Most bonus guides list terms alphabetically or by how easy they are to explain. That ordering is useless. Here is the ordering the arithmetic produces.

Read this carefully: items 4 to 8 are not small print about value — they are switches. Each one either leaves the bonus intact or reduces it to zero. Only items 1 to 3 change the number gradually, which is why the rest of this page prices those three and treats the others as pass/fail gates.

What terms do no-deposit bonuses actually carry?

Bonus-guide surveys of 2026 offers report no-deposit wagering at 30x–70x, maximum cashouts most often at $50–$100, max bets commonly $5 a spin, and expiry windows of 7 to 30 days. These are ranges reported across offers, not a measured market average — no regulator or operator publishes a distribution of bonus terms, so treat every figure below as a reported band with its source attached, and the exact combinations priced later on this page as illustrations rather than typical offers.

Two things stand out. First, every wagering figure in that table except the UK cap sits above 25x, which our wagering requirement guide establishes as the break-even multiplier on a 4% house edge — break-even is always 1 ÷ the edge. Second, the maximum cashout is the only term in the list that limits what you can receive; every other term governs what you must do. That asymmetry is why it behaves so differently from the rest, and why it survives regulation that the multiplier did not.

Why is the max cashout cap the worst term?

Because a no-deposit bonus can only pay you from the lucky tail, and the cap removes the tail while leaving the losing outcomes untouched. A wagering requirement takes a predictable percentage. A cap takes an unpredictable and much larger share, because it removes exactly the outcomes that carried the value.

1. Wald’s identity: expected loss = expected turnover × edge, and you cannot lose more than the bonus. So expected turnover ≤ B ÷ E.
2. Completers alone place B×W, so if p is the completion probability and V the balance held at the end, pB ÷ (V + B W E).
Realisable value = p × min(V, C), which is largest when V = C. That gives a hard ceiling:

Or, as a share of the advertised number: share of face value = C ÷ (C + B W E). The cap and the edge cost of the wagering split your bonus between you and the house in exact proportion. Every figure below comes from that one line.

Read the last column down. Two rows land on exactly the same 29.4% despite bonuses that differ twofold, and that coincidence is the tell for a rule almost nobody states: the headline number tells you nothing at all about the offer. Divide the formula through by the bonus and the bonus cancels. Write k for the cap expressed as a multiple of the bonus, and the whole thing collapses to share of face value = k ÷ (k + WR × edge) (16Best analysis). Only two quantities survive: how many times the bonus you may withdraw, and the product of multiplier and edge. Face value is not one of them.

Which is why a cap quoted in money is so misleading. A $100 cap is a 10× cap on a $10 bonus and a 1× cap on a $100 bonus — the same printed figure protecting ten times less. At 60x on a 4% slot that gap is the difference between realising up to 80.6% of face value and 29.4% of it. Cross the two reported bands — bonuses of $10–$50, caps most often $50–$100 — and real no-deposit ceilings sit somewhere between 1× and 10× the bonus (16Best analysis). So the first arithmetic to do on any offer is not the wagering sum. It is dividing the cap by the bonus.

The ceiling above is generous, because it assumes you finish the requirement holding exactly the cap and not a cent more. That is not how a sticky bonus behaves. To survive $1,000 of required turnover starting from $25 on a high-variance slot, you need a large hit early — and then the cap confiscates most of it. Our math: for a $25 bonus at 40x on a 4% edge, the edge cost of the requirement is $40, so the completion ceiling is 25 ÷ (V + 40). Uncapped, the value barely moves as V grows — that column converges on the $25 the casino handed you, exactly as money conservation demands. Capped, it collapses. The gap between those two columns is the cap’s price: at a $1,000 run-up it removes $21.63 of a $24.04 uncapped ceiling, or about 90% of what the bonus could otherwise be worth (16Best analysis; two-outcome model, probabilities are upper bounds not point estimates).

Can the wagering requirement even be completed?

Usually not — at typical no-deposit multipliers the required turnover costs more in house edge than the entire bonus is worth, so the expected path is busting before the requirement is met. This is the second-order point that turns the wagering requirement from an inconvenience into a structural barrier.

The mechanism: the expected edge cost of clearing is bonus × WR × edge. Divide by the bonus and the bonus cancels — the cost as a share of the bonus is simply WR × edge. When that product exceeds 1, the requirement costs more than the bonus can fund. That is the same break-even condition as our wagering requirement page, seen from the other side: WRbreak-even = 1 ÷ edge, or 25x at a 4% edge. Combine it with Markov’s inequality on the turnover you can generate and you get a distribution-free ceiling on the completion rate: P(complete) ≤ 1 ÷ (WR × edge) (16Best analysis).

The completion-rate column is an upper bound, not a forecast. It says that at best 41.7% of players can finish a 60x requirement on a 4% slot, and no strategy, staking pattern or luck distribution can lift it above that, because the bonus simply cannot generate enough turnover. On the low-RTP end of the range our RTP guide documents — 88% RTP penny slots — the same 60x requirement caps completion at 13.9%. Fewer than one player in seven can get there.

Note what this does to the marketing. A casino advertising “$25 free, 60x wagering” is describing a product where the house keeps the money in the majority of cases by construction, and the cap handles the minority. Neither number needs to be dishonest for the offer to be worth a fraction of its face.

How much does game weighting add?

A 10% weighting multiplies the real money you must bet by ten, which cuts the ceiling on a $25/40x/$100-cap bonus from $17.86 to $5.00. Slots almost always count 100%. Table games, which carry a far lower edge, are weighted at 10–20% or excluded outright — precisely because they would be cheap to clear on.

Run it through the same formula. At 100% weighting the requirement is $1,000 of turnover and the edge cost is $40. At 10% weighting the requirement is $10,000 of real bets and the edge cost, even at blackjack’s much lower edge, climbs sharply. Using the 4% slot edge for a like-for-like comparison, $10,000 of turnover costs $400, and the ceiling becomes 25 × 100 ÷ (100 + 400) = $5.00, or 20% of face value (16Best analysis). Weighting also belongs in the same category as the cashout cap: a term the regulator looked at and left alone. The Gambling Commission acknowledged in its 2025 consultation response that it understood “the concerns about Games Weighting Contributions attached to wagering requirements and the impact this could have on how much a customer needs to gamble” — then concluded that from the current evidence it did “not think it is necessary to review rules on weightings” at this time. So of the four terms that actually set the value of a no-deposit bonus, exactly one — the multiplier — now carries a hard numerical limit in Great Britain.

Why does the max bet rule void so many bonuses?

Because it is a hard switch, not a sliding cost — one bet over the limit, commonly $5 per spin, and the bonus plus every penny it won is removed. It is also the term most likely to be breached by accident, because it interacts with two other rules pulling the opposite way.

Here is the trap. The wagering requirement rewards small stakes: a $25 bankroll pushed through $1,000 of turnover survives longer at $0.50 a spin than at $5.00, where you have five spins of cushion and near-certain ruin. But the expiry window rewards large stakes, because $1,000 of turnover in seven days is a lot of clicking. Players who feel the clock raise their stake, and the max-bet clause is waiting. A voided bonus is not a reduced bonus — it is zero, after the hours are already spent.

Reality check: the max-bet cap is not there to protect you from fast losses. It exists to stop a player converting a sticky bonus into a single large-variance bet, which would be the only rational way to attack a capped offer. Removing that option is what forces the slow grind — and the slow grind is where the edge does its work.

How many hours does clearing one take?

About 2,000 spins, or roughly 3.3 hours of continuous play, for a $25 bonus at 40x — which puts the best-case return at $5.36 an hour, below the $7.25 US federal minimum wage. Time is the price you actually pay for a no-deposit bonus, and it is the one cost the offer never mentions.

Price the clock: $25 × 40 = $1,000 of turnover. At a $0.50 stake chosen to survive the grind, that is 2,000 spins. Our RTP guide uses 600 spins an hour as the standard online pace; Michael Bluejay’s timed observations put real players between 300 and 800 spins an hour. So the clearing time is 2.5 to 6.7 hours, about 3.3 hours at the 600 pace.
Divide the value by the time: the $17.86 ceiling works out at $5.36 an hour; the $2.40 figure that applies if clearing needs a $1,000 run-up works out at $0.72 an hour. The US federal minimum wage has been $7.25 since 24 July 2009 (US Department of Labor). Even the mathematical best case pays less (16Best analysis).

Put it in a body. Three and a bit hours is a feature film plus the drive home, spent clicking a button 2,000 times, for an expected return that would not buy a coffee. Framed that way, the no-deposit bonus stops looking like free money and starts looking like what it is: an acquisition cost the casino pays in bonus credit rather than cash, because bonus credit is worth a fraction of its printed value.

Is a no-deposit bonus better or worse than a deposit match?

Neither, and the comparison most guides make is a scope error — a no-deposit bonus cannot lose you money, while a deposit match can, so the two numbers are not the same kind of number. Setting them side by side properly is more useful than declaring a winner.

Two conventions in that table are worth naming, because they are where comparisons like this usually go wrong. The multipliers are drawn from the reported bands — 60x for no-deposit, 35x for a deposit match, matching our wagering requirement guide — not from any measured average. And the cashout row applies a cap to one column and not the other; that is the standard shape of the two products as bonus guides describe them, but it is an assumption, and it is doing a lot of work.

What the number hides: the “+$29.41” and the “−$40” are different scopes and must not be ranked against each other. The no-deposit figure is a gross ceiling with zero own-money exposure; the deposit figure is the net value of the bonus after the edge cost of the turnover it obliges, with $100 of your own money in play. Stated correctly: unlike any offer that requires a deposit, a no-deposit bonus cannot be expected-value negative for the player — which is exactly why it is capped so hard. The operator cannot recoup from your deposit, so it limits what it can ever pay out. The deposit match runs the opposite way: uncapped upside, but your money funds the edge (16Best analysis, both figures at a 4% edge; deposit figure uses the bonus-only basis from our wagering page).

The practical reading: a no-deposit bonus is a low-stakes trial of a site, worth a few dollars in expectation and several hours in time. It is not a route to money, and any page presenting it as one has skipped the cap. Did the UK 10x cap fix any of this?

It fixed half of it and left the decisive half untouched: from 19 January 2026 UK-licensed operators may not attach wagering above 10 times the incentive, but no rule limits how low the maximum cashout can be. The Commission’s rule is a numerical cap on one term only — “wagering requirements to incentives … over a maximum of 10 times.” Cashout ceilings fall under the general obligation in Licence Condition 7.1.1 that terms be fair, transparent and not misleading, which governs how a cap is presented, not how small it may be.

Run the formula on a UK-legal offer. A $25 bonus at 10x on a 4% slot carries an edge cost of just $10, so the ceiling jumps to $22.73 — 90.9% of face value, up from 62.5% at the 60x extreme the Commission said some licensees were applying. That is a real improvement, and the Commission deserves credit for it. Then watch what one unregulated term does to it.

The catch: the old $25/60x/$100-cap offer had a ceiling of $15.625. Solve 25C ÷ (C + 10) = 15.625 and you get C = 50 ÷ 3 = $16.67. So an operator can comply fully with the 10x cap and reproduce the pre-cap value of the offer exactly, by cutting the maximum cashout from $100 to about $17. In currency-free terms — which is how the UK rule itself is written — the cap has to fall from 4× the bonus to two-thirds of the bonus, a six-fold cut that lands well below the bottom of the 1×–10× range the reported bonus and cap bands imply (16Best analysis). The Commission was not blind to the mechanism. Explaining why it rejected an outright ban and the very low wagering options of 1 and 5 times, it wrote that “gambling licensees are highly likely to introduce terms and conditions that prevent customers from cashing out bonuses” — it foresaw the substitution, chose 10x partly to avoid provoking it, and then capped the term that is easy to measure while leaving the substitute unlimited.

A UK operator can fully undo the 10x wagering cap by cutting the cashout ceiling from 4x the bonus to two-thirds of it - on a $25 offer, $100 down to $16.67. The multiplier is capped; the ceiling is not.

It is not the first time. The last major UK intervention on bonus terms came from the Competition and Markets Authority, which on 1 February 2018 secured undertakings from Ladbrokes, William Hill and PT Entertainment: players would not be required to play through their own deposited money before withdrawing it, and operators could not, in the CMA’s words, rely on vague terms “to confiscate players’ money.” That fixed a real abuse. It said nothing about how small a ceiling an operator may place on winnings derived from a bonus. Two separate UK interventions, eight years apart, and the cashout cap has come through both without a number attached to it.

This is the whole spine in one exchange. Regulators, comparison sites and players all watch the wagering multiplier because it is a single visible number. The cap is a single visible number too, and it is the one that decides the outcome.

Why do bonus value claims disagree?

Because five different quantities all get called “the value of the bonus,” and most pages never say which one they mean. If two guides give you different answers for the same offer, one of these five is almost always the reason.

  • Face value vs expected value. “$25 free” is a marketing figure — the amount of credit issued. Expected value is what that credit converts to after wagering and the cap. On the $25 offer modelled here the gap is 1.4× at the mathematical ceiling and 10× to 25× once you allow for the run-up needed to survive the turnover. Any page quoting the first as the second is quoting an advertisement.
  • What the wagering applies to. Bonus-only wagering on a $100 bonus at 30x is $3,000 of turnover. Bonus-plus-deposit wagering on the same headline is $6,000. Identical multiplier, double the cost. No-deposit offers are bonus-only by definition, which is why their multipliers are set so much higher — there is no deposit to pad the base.
  • Game weighting. A “$1,000 wagering requirement” means $1,000 of slot bets or $10,000 of blackjack bets at a 10% weighting. Guides that quote the requirement without the weighting table are quoting a number that can be off by ten times.
  • What the cap applies to. Some terms cap total winnings from the bonus; others cap the entire withdrawable balance at settlement, which on a sticky bonus is the same thing but on a non-sticky one is not. On a converted, non-sticky bonus the second wording can claw back money that was already real. Read whether the cap reads “maximum winnings” or “maximum withdrawal.”
  • RTP vs house edge. A 96% RTP is a 4% edge; a 94% RTP is a 6% edge — a 50% higher cost on identical turnover. Guides that mix the two, or that use a marketing RTP for a game the bonus excludes, produce numbers that cannot be reconciled. We state the edge explicitly in every calculation on this page.

One dated conflict, resolved. Sources disagree on when the UK wagering cap took effect: several legal briefings say 19 December 2025, while the Gambling Commission’s own consultation response and news release say 19 January 2026, having extended the original December date. We use 19 January 2026 throughout, because the regulator that wrote the rule is the authority on its commencement.

On currency and scope. Every calculation on this page is in dollars, and no figure has been converted between currencies — no exchange rate enters the arithmetic anywhere, in any year.
